Occupational wellness is about doing things that give your life meaning and purpose. These are activities that really matter to you. They should line up with what you believe in, like your job and hobbies.

Here are some questions and strategies to help you enhance your occupational wellness. Reflect on these. Make a list of the actions you will take. Also, list the resources you might need to achieve wellness in this area.

Work Relationship Questions to Ask:

  • Are you engaged in a profession or volunteer activity that aligns with your core values? If you are retired, do you have plans to engage in meaningful activities each day?
  • Is there a consistent and open line of communication established with your employer or coworkers?
  • Does your work give a sense of personal fulfillment? Does it offer intellectual engagement? Does it allow you to use your talents, skills, and knowledge effectively?

Tips for Better Work Relationships:

  • Think critically on your current position in both your career and personal life. Actively seek out job opportunities that align coherently with that context.
  • Thoroughly investigate all career opportunities (I always use Indeed.com, let me know what you use!).
  • If you get disability benefits, explore work options without losing SSI/SSDI. Calculate your earning limit at www.ssa.gov.
  • Talk to your employer or coworkers about their preferred communication styles. This ensures everyone can be responsive to individual needs and work styles.
  • When a challenge arises at work, communicate clearly about what resources or support would help a resolution.

Balance Questions To Consider:

  • Do you make time to chill and have some fun?
  • Are you spending time with friends, taking walks, or engaging in healthy activities to relax?
  • Have you been reflecting on how you spend your time each day? Have you considered how rewarding it is to engage in volunteer work within your community?

Ways to Keep Your Balance:

  • Conduct thorough research into careers and employment opportunities that align with your key interests. Make sure they offer the necessary flexibility to preserve a well-balanced life.
  • Keep a calendar and regularly review it. Dedicate time to activities that you genuinely enjoy.
  • Use tracking tools to balance your workload. If it starts to resemble a scene from a disaster movie, don’t hesitate to shout for help! Even superheroes need sidekicks!

Questions About Achievements:

  • Do you find yourself in a profession that brings you anticipation and a sense of achievement and pride?
  • Are you celebrating your accomplishments and recognizing the hard work that led to your success?

Tips for Getting Things Done:

Think about what you enjoy most. Consider working with people, solving complex problems, or unleashing your creativity. Then, thoroughly explore various careers and employment opportunities in that area. Consider the specific roles available. Also, look into the skills required. Evaluate the potential for growth within the field. Think about how each position aligns with your personal values and interests. Networking with professionals in those sectors is crucial. Seeking experiential learning through internships or volunteer opportunities can also offer invaluable insights. These experiences help guide your career path effectively.
